February Is Shop Season — Use It
The field work hasn't started and the calendar is as open as it gets all year. That makes right now the cheapest, calmest time to get the pickup, the truck, and the shop equipment squared away.
Come April, everybody needs everything at once. Tires, batteries, an oil change, that noise the front end has been making since November — it all lands in the same three weeks, right when you can least afford to have something sitting on a lift.
February doesn't work that way. Our shop here in Wilton has room on the schedule, and you have time to spare. That's a combination worth using.
What Our Auto Repair Shop Handles
Farmers Union Oil Company runs a full auto repair and tire shop alongside the fuel and propane side of the business. Same cooperative, same people, same counter you already stop at:
- Oil changes and routine service
- Brake work and general repair
- Tire sales, mounting, and flat repair
- Batteries — testing and replacement
The shop is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 5:00, and Saturday mornings 8:00 to noon.
A battery that's weak in February is a battery that quits in April, usually somewhere inconvenient. Testing takes a couple of minutes and costs you nothing.
Cold Is Hard on Batteries
A battery loses a serious share of its cranking power once it's below zero, and at the same time your engine's oil has thickened up and asks for more of it. That's why batteries die in winter even though they were fine all fall.
If yours is three or four years old, or if it's been slow to turn over on cold mornings, have it checked before you're standing in a parking lot with jumper cables. We sell and install batteries.
The Right Oil Matters More in Winter
We carry the full Cenex lubricant line, including Maxtron synthetics. Synthetic oil holds its flow characteristics far better in cold weather, which means faster oil pressure on startup and less wear during the exact part of the year that's hardest on an engine.
That goes for more than the pickup. Tractors, skid steers, grain trucks, and shop equipment all sit outside in this country, and they all start easier on the right oil.
Tires Before the Thaw
Cold air means low pressure — tires drop noticeably as the temperature falls, and an underinflated tire wears wrong and pulls your mileage down.
It's also worth thinking a season ahead. Section-line roads soften up fast in the spring, and worn tires that got you through winter won't do you any favors in the mud. We sell, mount, and repair tires right here.
